I checked and no one has posted this...I can't believe it.

Edit: Ok, ok I fail, I get it.

L'Arc has a new single coming out in 2008 called "DRINK IT DOWN", which will also be the theme for Devil May Cry 4 for the XBox 360 and PS3. The game comes out in January...the single comes out in spring.

Title: Shards. American Holiday. Part Four.
Rating: PG-15 (for this part).
Warnings: My humble attempt at humor. More semi-angsty Gackt thoughts (he’s cranky, poor dear). Hinted GakuHai (Gackt + Hyde).
Pairings: Gackt certainly thinks it's GakuHai...though it isn't...yet.
Disclaimer: I'm not really that funny. As to the authenticity of this created tale, your guess is as good as mine. But for the record, it’s speculation, through and through. Consider this AU from the real world. Furthermore, Gackt and Hyde belong to themselves, as do their friends and family. No monetary gain is accumulated through the writing of this story.
Words: 2344.

Summary: In an unusual manipulation of events, Gackt and Hyde find themselves acting as awkward friends during an American business trip. Second in the "Shards" series of short stories.
This time: Gackt is cranky because he isn’t getting any. Hyde pursues other conversations in a coffee shop. Will Gackt keep his temper in check?

Archive.
Earlier stories: pressing moments.
Parts of this story: [1] [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

To do so would admit defeat. No, more certainly, this way might be interesting.

As I mentioned in the post where someone asked for Hurry Xmas translations, I thought I'd translate this one for fun, and Hyde didn't disappoint. This is a fun song, and perhaps not as innocent as you might think. ;)

Christmas Eve in Japan:

I'm usually not big on a lot of explaining before translations, but the cultural setup for this really goes a long way here. Basically, Christmas Eve in Japan is like Valentine's Day in America, or worse. It's your night to get together with your special honey, have some wine, Christmas cake (usually yellow cake with white icing and strawberries), KFC chicken (which if you forgot you can buy from makeshift stands by the train station exits for exorbitant prices), and then (cue Ken's porno guitar chords here!) make sweet love down by the fire. There is nothing more pathetic for a young person than being single on Christmas Eve.

About Jesus: Christmas is also a commercial and romantic day with virtually no religious overtones in Japan, and you see Santa and reindeer far more than mangers or Jesus. Hyde has generally expressed, I feel, a larger interest and deeper knowledge of Christianity than most of his fellow countrymen through his music and interests, which may account for what I feel is the bit of cynicism near the end. Or I could be wrong. Always a possibility!

So, with all that background in mind as you read, here's my translation. Enjoy!

Hurry Xmas, lyrics and music by Hyde:
(Done from lyrics found here)

The town, all decorated, it's become a fantasy... it wouldn't be bad to have it like this year round, would it?
The present you've wanted, hidden away... My pounding heart

Oh, hurry, hurry! Won't Christmas Eve ever get here?

Hurry Xmas! The lamp of a candle, stealing away the darkness of the night sky...
Stars float in your dear eyes.

Pouring wine, sweetly splashing it into glasses... so sweet
Well, let's get this party started! Come on music!

It'd be great if it snowed and piled up, but it looks like that won't happen this year either, will it?
But as long as you're here in that stylish dress, I don't need anything else!
Ah, how the whole sparkling town is flooded with dreams...

The lamp of a candle, stealing away the darkness of the night sky...
Your present is still hidden away.

Holly wreaths and candy canes, trees dripping with ornaments
Do such things really make the Holy Child happy? (OR Will you really like all of these things?*)

Xmas time has come to town
Xmas time for you and me
Xmas time has come to town

In the holy night, a kiss! Thank you, Jesus...

Disclaimer: Non-native speaker, self-taught while living in Japan 4.5 years. I welcome corrections and notes about any mistakes you see, but please be aware I prefer fluid translations over literal ones, and will occasionally tweak language to preserve the fluidity of a translation rather than have choppy, word-for-word results.

Notes:

1. While there is no technical "wine" in the pouring glasses part, I'm going with the idea amaku (sweetly) is being used as an adverb here. In Japanese you can say "oishiku taberu", which hurts the English speaker's brain as it literally means "eat deliciously." The translation for that is usually along the lines of "enjoy your meal." So even without wine being present in the sentence I'm going with that, based on the content and the tradition of wine on Christmas Eve.

2. While "ano ko" or "that child" is literally written for the 5th from last line, to me there is little question as to which child Hyde's referring to, considering the sentence before it with its strong negative bent (ka na) and the fact it's Christmas Eve. The word for decoration in the line before that, referring to the tree, is also one that means heavily or gaudily decorated, decked out, tricked out, etc. I used Holy Child to give the idea of Jesus while preserving the "child" originally mentioned.

*Edit! I spoke with my tutor (started taking lessons a few weeks ago so I don't forget everything I learned while I was over there) and he says that "ano ko" can work as "that girl" or with the direction of this song, "you" (as in the girl) if Hyde and she are not together yet and are separate.

So it's possible there's a double meaning here between Jesus/the girl because it still seems odd for him to say that line about her as she's not a stranger he doesn't know. I believe you can read it as either meaning or both. Your choice. :)

3. Not really a note, but I find the last line really funny in context of the holiday if I'm reading that right. Naughty Hyde, thanking Jesus for impending nookie. ;)

Anyway, comments, corrections from fellow translators and observations are welcome as always. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

With less than a month to go, everyone ought to have their tickets and travel plans sorted out, yes? So, who is coming to any of the lives in Osaka? Who wants to meet up and be genki at the lives in a group of crazy foreigners?!

I am hoping to organize a little get-together before the actual lives. Since I am going to all four shows, I can meet people on any of those days. Also, given that I live in Osaka, I ought to be able to help anyone who needs a hand finding their way around.

So! Either comment here or email bunnychan11 at hotmail dot com (put Osaka live in the subject, please) and let me know if you would like to come! Depending on the level of interest and number of participants I might be able to organize more than just a simple meet-up.

However this is ONLY for the Osaka shows. Please don't contact me about getting together in Tokyo or Saitama or elsewhere.

Thanks for the interest!

(Feel free to let any non-LJ friends who are going to the shows know about this too. The more the merrier!)

http://www.larc-en-ciel.com/jp/popup/hxmas-goods/goods.html

The bottom two goods, the cushion seals and the figure, what is it trying to tell me? I don't really understand. :x Only after the 20th? If so, too bad because I would've bought two sets of those seals at the 109-2 when the event started D:

MAN. I came into some unexpected yen and then L'arc threw this at me. Jerks ♥ ._.

Off topic, the special goods event at 109-2, it was at a shop called Diavlo, which sells only belts. Seriously. Just belts, and belt chains, and belt buckles.... o_o; And wow, no one bought anything but the L'arc goods X3;;

Public Service Announcement :
Concerning Theatre of KISS dates in Saitama and Osaka - A final round of tickets has gone on sale as of Dec 16th 2007; HOWEVER, these are the "dreg tickets" from which your view is partially obstructed by equipment, cameras or other structures.

For those who wanted a ticket and are happy to take anything, this is good news. The dreg tickets cost 9000 yen each same as regular tickets.

For those who are trying to buy normal tickets via online auctions, be warned that a lot of new tickets coming on sale as of the 16th have a high chance of being these dregs. Be careful what you buy.

PREVIEW:

At My Icon Journal

To me, one of the more amusing aspects of Tetsu and Ayana Sakai's love, marriage and baby carriage is not the gleaming brilliance of their collective dental work, but the fact that Ayana would probably be adopting his last name over her own . . .

. . .Which can be literally translated in Chinese as 'alcohol well' XD.

The first time I read the kanji for Sakai, I hesitated from jumping to conclusions, as the meanings of kanji don't necessarily correspond to the Chinese characters (hanzi) that they originated from. Fortunately, the intarwebz has many a tool to fuel the fire of language geekery, and Denshi Jisho is particularly shiny. (Well, shinier than Babelfish, that pond scum XD.) Without further ado:

- sake - n. alcohol; sake

- i - n. well

It's likely that Sakai has a more . . .um, sophisticated meaning than 'alcohol / sake well', but as I only study Japanese on a procrastination basis, I wouldn't happen to know it. (Anyone more informed than I am?) Regardless, I think it's pretty neat and funny all at the same time, if only because Tetsu is quite clearly known as the raging alcoholic of the group *cheeky smile* All the best, Te-chan ♥

Oh, and this is my first post here. Hello, enchanté, please don't harpoon me, the usual ^^ And if you insist on harpooning, save it for Hyde's stylist. The single red glove only invites comparisons to The Gloved One, and delightful as imagining them together in Crotch Grabbers Anonymous would be, my brain doesn't need much more breaking XD

Hi, was wondering, does anyone has or know where to get the song SHINE by L'Arc~En~Ciel? Thanks.
00:05
I'm selling my copy of Neo Universe and Ark for $10 each if anyone's interested. I'm moving, and it's on my list of things to not store in my parents' basement for the next 5 years (this is the whole list if you're interested - a LOT of CDs and books... packrat).

I'm leaving shipping and payment information in the link to my journal so I don't bother you guys here too much. But if you're interested, it's there ^_^
